Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved in the JCR but it can sometimes be a bit daunting. Here is a guide on the different ways you can get involved.

Being on JCR Committee

This is the most direct way to get involved. You can either get appointed or elected. For appointed positions, an email is sent out with a list of available positions. You can reply to the email saying that you are interested and will have an informal interview in front of the JCR Committee. After this, the Committee decides who to go for in each role. For elected positions, you have to submit a manifesto, with a proposer and seconder. Then, you have to make a speech and, along with the other candidates, answer questions at hustings. After this, the JCR gets the chance to cast their vote (using ranked choice) and the winner(s) assume the role. Each role runs for a year except Entz Rep which has elections every term.

Submitting a Motion at a General Meeting

This is another effective way to make changes. General Meetings take place twice a term and the Secretary sends out a form to submit a motion. The fields you have to fill in are as follows:

  1. Title of the motion
  2. A proposer (you) and a seconder, who are both JCR members
  3. 'This JCR notes that ...' [any factual points relating to the motion]
  4. 'This JCR believes that ...' [any opinions/arguments you may have relating to the motion]
  5. 'This JCR resolves to ...' [the proposed solution]

Then, the JCR has the opportunity to ask questions and then vote on the motion.

Attending GMs/Hustings

Even if you don't want to directly get involved, you can still attend General Meetings and Hustings. This gives the opportunity to ask questions and better understand the candidates in an election or a motion being voted on. These are held in the JCR and General Meetings have free pizza!

Voting

The Returning Officer will send out information on how to vote via the Student Union website. Voting is a massive opportunity to have your voice heard and it is very much encouraged! The email will have notes from the Hustings, and instructions on how to vote.
